Butterfly Hug

Whether it’s stress at work, high anxiety post partum, or even a full out panic attack, this technique can be hugely helpful in getting your nervous system back to a calm collected state.

Bilateral stimulation (BLS) is becoming more and more known and studied, and for good reason. It can increase dopamine levels (some of the feel good hormones), as well as boost your ability to form new neural pathways by getting both side of your brain engaged at once.

The gentle and slow repetition combined with the slight pressure on the chest, similar to a hug, sends signals to your body that you are safe and comforted, engaging your parasympathetic system to help you get to a more relaxed state.

This technique is pulled from EMDR Therapy and originated in Mexico by Lucina Artigas who was helping survivors of Hurricane Pauline.
