Somatic Senses: Class 1 Sound/Hearing
The topic of our 5 main senses is a big one, so we are starting with the basics. In this class series, each day will cover a different one of the 5 senses; smell, sight, taste, touch and sound. We will focus on each one on it’s given day, do one exercise together and then focus on that sense throughout that day. Somatic work is slow and gentle work, but the impact it will have on your life will be incredible, if you give yourself a chance. The exercises may seem simple, but the work they do through your subconscious and physical body is anything but simple or small.
This is the first class in the 5 day series and is focused on the sense of hearing and how it impacts your internal landscape. This is a very basic introduction, it is important to start small so you don’t feel overwhelmed or unsafe.
We often allow ourselves to tune out noise as we get overstimulated; too many noises at once, we need to focus on a specific task or we just hear it so often we tune it out as background noise. This has its place as part of our survival and sanity of course, we simply cannot pay attention to every single noise all of the time. On the flip side, we can use and appreciate our ability to hear as a way to connect with ourselves and learn about how external input can change our internal landscape, in both positive and not so positive ways. For example: I have kids, they have a lot to say all of the time. I adore them, and their voices and how their laughter lights up the room. Also, my system cannot handle that level of input all of the time. When I am not in tune with my body, I snap and yell for everyone to be quiet, OR I simply tune out, go on auto pilot and end up missing many things they are trying to tell me, and we all feel bad in both scenarios. When I am in tune with my body and mind, I can see when it is getting too much, and I have the capacity to tell them “hey one at a time” in a calm manner or “I need a bit of quiet time, if this can wait, tell me in a little bit so I can hear you better”. Plug this type of scenario into any relationship, personal or professional.
Sound can also be a fantastic way to experience incredibly positive feelings, and even heal your body! Music and frequency are prime examples. In future classes we will explore bilateral stimulation through music, frequency healing and more. Again, this is just the beginning.
